New Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro: Specs, Prices, and Pre-Order Deals

Apple quietly dropped a new Mac mini on August 25, a full two weeks ahead of its September 9 iPhone event. It comes in two flavors: a cheaper model with the brand new M6 chip, and a pricier one with the M5 Pro. Pre-orders are open now, and the first units land on doorsteps and in stores on Tuesday, September 22.

If you’ve been waiting on a small desktop Mac to run local models or host an always-on agent, this is the one to look at. Here’s what I could verify about it, what each configuration costs, and where the early discounts are.

The short version

Mac mini M6 vs M5 Pro specs

Both models share the same 5-by-5-inch, 2-inch-tall aluminum box as the 2024 redesign. Silver only. The changes are all inside.

Both models also get two front USB-C ports (USB 3, 10Gb/s), a front headphone jack with high-impedance support, HDMI on the back, and new genlock support over USB-C for syncing cameras and displays in video work. Apple says the SSDs are up to twice as fast as the previous generation.

Why the cheaper model has the newer chip

This trips people up. The $899 model has the M6, the $1,699 model has the M5 Pro. Apple’s done this before (last year’s Mac Studio paired an M4 Max with an M3 Ultra), and the reason is the same: the Pro, Max, and Ultra variants of a generation always lag the base chip.

This time the lag is permanent. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is skipping the M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra entirely and moving straight to the M7 family in the first half of 2027. So the M5 Pro is the top Mac mini chip for a while.

Which one is faster depends on the job. The M6 has Apple’s new “super cores,” which is where the single-threaded speed lives, plus the doubled Neural Engine. The M5 Pro has more cores, a bigger GPU, and twice the memory bandwidth and memory ceiling. A single app doing one thing at a time won’t feel much difference. Anything that scales across cores or pushes a lot of data through memory will, and that’s where the M5 Pro pulls away.

Apple’s performance claims

Apple’s numbers, with the comparison baseline they used:

The big AI jumps come from Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core, which is new on both chips. If your workload isn’t local model inference, expect the ordinary 20 to 40% generational bump rather than the 4x headline.

Full pricing and configurations

Every model comes with 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Apple sells these preset configurations in the US:

Upgrade pricing on the M6 is steep, and this is where the memory shortage really shows. Going from 16GB to 24GB is $200, and to 32GB is $400. Storage runs $200 for 512GB, $500 for 1TB, and $1,000 for 2TB. The 10Gb Ethernet option is a separate add-on on both models.

Education pricing knocks $100 off each base model ($799 and $1,599).

About that $300 price hike

The M4 Mac mini launched at $599 in late 2024. Apple bumped the starting price to $799 this spring and blamed a global DRAM shortage driven by AI data center demand. Apple told the Wall Street Journal it had “never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly.” Now the base model is $899, and the 256GB tier is back.

So the “cheap Mac” is gone for the moment. The M6 at $899 is still the least expensive way into a 2nm Apple Silicon machine, but it’s no longer an impulse buy.

How to pre-order the new Mac mini

Pre-orders opened August 25. You have three realistic options:

1. Apple directly at apple.com/shop/buy-mac/mac-mini. Full price, but this is the only place to get custom configurations (48GB, 8TB, 10Gb Ethernet, the 18-core M5 Pro). Delivery starts September 22.
2. Amazon. Stock configurations only, but it is the only retailer discounting pre-orders right now. Ships for September 22 arrival.
3. Other retailers. Best Buy and the usual Apple resellers are taking pre-orders on the stock configurations at Apple’s prices, with no discount as of this writing.

One warning from Macworld that lines up with what happened to the M4 model: popular configurations can slip to multi-week delivery windows fast once launch-day stock is gone. Apple’s memory supply is still tight. If you already know which one you want, pre-order it instead of waiting for the review cycle.

Amazon pre-order deals (as of September 8)

Amazon started discounting the M6 on August 28, three days after the announcement, and added the M5 Pro shortly after. They’re small, but they’re the first cash discounts anywhere and they beat every other retailer:

Amazon pre-order pricing floats, so check the listing before you count on a number. Discounts on a new Mac mini usually grow over the first few months after launch, so if $20 to $30 doesn’t move you, waiting until November is a reasonable bet. The flip side is availability: the base M4 Mac mini sold out at most retailers for weeks at a time during the shortage.

Which one should you buy?

Here’s how I’d split it, based on what I use small Macs for.

Get the M6 (16GB or 24GB) if…

You want a fast general-purpose desktop, a coding machine, or a low-power always-on home server for agents and automations. The base model is faster in single-threaded work than anything Apple sold last year, it idles at almost nothing, and 16GB is plenty for an agent like OpenClaw plus a few services. I’ve been running that exact kind of setup on a headless M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB and memory has never been the bottleneck.

Get the M6 with 32GB if…

You want to run local models in the 7B to 14B range comfortably alongside everything else. The 32GB config also unlocks the full 170GB/s memory bandwidth. Just know that 32GB is a $400 upgrade, which pushes the 512GB version to $1,499. At that point the M5 Pro is only $200 more, and I’d have a hard time not spending it.

Get the M5 Pro if…

Local inference is the main reason you’re buying. Memory bandwidth is the number that decides how fast tokens come out of a local model, and the M5 Pro’s 307GB/s is double the M6’s. Pair that with 48GB or 64GB of unified memory and you can hold a quantized 30B-class model with room to spare. Thunderbolt 5 also matters here if you plan to hang fast external NVMe storage off it for model files, because Apple’s internal storage upgrades are the worst deal on the whole sheet.

Skip this generation if…

You own an M4 Mac mini and you don’t run AI models on it. A 40% multithreaded bump is real, but you won’t feel it in a browser and a terminal. Wait for the M7.

What about the September 9 event?

Apple’s “Surprise and shine” event is Wednesday, September 9 at 10 AM Pacific (1 PM Eastern), streamed at apple.com/apple-events and on YouTube. It is the iPhone event: iPhone 18 Pro, the foldable iPhone, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and AirPods 5 are the expected lineup.

Apple got the Mac mini and the new Mac Studio (M5 Max and M5 Ultra, also shipping September 22) out the door a week early so they would not compete with the phones for attention. Don’t expect new Mac mini news at the event, and don’t expect Apple to drop the price afterward either. The Amazon discounts are the only price movement worth watching for now.
